CARDIOPULMONARY
RESUSCITATION
( CPR )
Did you know that pouring or
splashing water on an unconscious person could rather worsen his or her
condition?
And are you aware that, slapping an unconscious
person does not get him or her any better?
We will talk
about the Do’s and Don’ts later. But let’s quickly look at how to perform a CPR
should need be.
Take note
that CPR should only be done when a person shows no signs of life (not
breathing, unconscious or unresponsive).
Don’t spend too much time checking for pulse
as the time wasted could have been a life saver.
Three Steps To CPR
CALL FOR HELP
If you are
alone, try shouting for help and then, dial the emergency numbers. Be calm and
instruct the people around to seek help as you stay with the unconscious person.
PUMP
Ensure that
the person is lying on a flat surface. If the person is still unresponsive, begin
chest compression.
Put your hands together (one hand on top of the other) in
the centre of the chest and push down at approximately 2inches (5.1cm) or one
thirds of the chest depth.
BLOW
After every
thirty (30) compressions, give two life breaths by tilting the head back gently
and lifting the chin.
Pinch the nostrils closed and cover the mouth firmly with
yours. Blow firmly into his or her mouth.
Give two
breaths after 30 compressions.
Keep doing
this at the speed of approximately five repeats in two minutes until the person
recovers, help arrives or someone else relieves you.
DONT'S
Don’t feed
or give water to an unconscious person or immediately the person recovers. This
could cause choking.
Slapping and
splashing water on an unconscious person is only effective in movies. Don’t try
it. Pouring could water on the person might increase his or her sensitivity to cold
if the person is already cold. Which could result in hypothermia in most cases.
Don’t put a
pillow under the head of an unconscious person.
Don’t leave
the person there alone unless it is very necessary that you do so.
BE A LIFE SAVER
